Wednesday, March 26th, 2008From Rolling Stone (via slashdot) Wal-Mart Wants $10 CDs. The price breakdown of a $15.99 CD at the bottom is very interesting.
Excerpt:
In the past decade, Wal-Mart has quietly emerged as the nation’s biggest record store. Wal-Mart now sells an estimated one out of every five major-label albums. It has so much power, industry insiders say, that what it chooses to stock can basically determine what becomes a hit. “If you don’t have a Wal-Mart account, you probably won’t have a major pop artist,” says one label executive.
Along with other giant retailers such as Best Buy and Target, Wal-Mart willingly loses money selling CDs for less than $10 (they buy most hit CDs from distributors for around $12). These companies use bargain CDs to lure consumers to the store, hoping they might also grab a boombox or a DVD player while checking out the music deals.

The Great Tantra Challenge
Tuesday, March 25th, 2008The Great Tantra Challenge, from BoingBoing
On 3 March 2008, in a popular TV show, Sanal Edamaruku, the president of Rationalist International, challenged India’s most “powerful” tantrik (black magician) to demonstrate his powers on him. That was the beginning of an unprecedented experiment. After all his chanting of mantra (magic words) and ceremonies of tantra failed, the tantrik decided to kill Sanal Edamaruku with the “ultimate destruction ceremony” on live TV. Sanal Edamaruku agreed and sat in the altar of the black magic ritual. India TV observed skyrocketing viewership rates.

The science of religion - Where angels no longer fear to tread
Saturday, March 22nd, 2008The Economist has a very interesting article about the science of religion and some scientists search for where the need or desire for religion comes from. The article, The science of religion, Where angels no longer fear to tread is a good read about a subject that is very intriguing. Religion seems to be ubiquitous to Humans and it seems logical that there is some biological need for it.
