There seems to be quite a chorus out there of people not too happy about the “licensing changes for Movable Type 3″:http://www.sixapart.com/corner/archives/2004/05/its_about_time.shtml. “Technorati has a good list of discussions about the new licensing changes.”:http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sixapart.com%2Fcorner%2Farchives%2F2004%2F05%2Fits_about_time.shtml

Personally, I would have no problem shelling out $70 for a non-comercial license as long as it did not restrict the number of authors/blogs, like the 2.x versions did. I use MovableType for my personal blog and I host blogs for a few friends too.

If I was going to do a straight upgrade (no future expansion) I’d be looking to shell out $150 for the same number of users/blogs that I have now.

Several people (”The Loony Bin, for one”:http://www.lunenburg.org/wade/archives/000541.php) have also noted that there is a limit not just on the number of users, but on the number of CPU’s the computer has (limit of one). Well, the computer running this site just happens to have 2 CPU’s so I don’t know what license I would need…even if I were ready to grab one. (Update: The single CPU clause can be found in the click-through license you have to agree to before you can download the free version. See “here”:https://secure.sixapart.com/t/store?__mode=confirm).

Update: One thought…I have no problem with “Six Apart” wanting to make money. As I said above, without the user/blog limits I would probably have already gone and purchased a copy. I guess I could also install separate copies of the free version for the friend’s I host for. That’s a lot of extra maintenance and work, but it could be done.

I use MT for links and a blogroll and a couple other pieces that aren’t meant for public consumption. One of the nice pieces of MovableType was that you could create additional blogs as you see fit to cover additional pieces of functionality for your site.

It just seems that this is a step backward in the licensing. By moving to MT3 you are losing functionality that was in 2.x unless you have a very large bucket of money.
